Dorm Room Bedding

Moving to a dorm room comes with many changes in life, such as, moving out of your parents’ place, leaving your friends from high school, and choosing a major. Being in an unfamiliar room may not help you sleep well during the first few weeks, so you need to buy comfortable dorm room bedding, sheets and bed linens.

Comfortable does not mean costly. Your budget should prioritize books and school supplies before bedding. Besides, it is not a good idea to bring expensive bedding to a dorm where it is likely to be stolen or ruined. Plan to buy dorm room bedding before the fall semester, since this is sale season for bedding and you’ll be able to find many choices within your budget.

Before you buy dorm room bedding, keep in mind the size of the beds in the dorm so you don’t buy the wrong size of bed sheets. Often, dorm rooms have twin beds that are longer than usual. If you don’t have the exact size, ask the school. Remember that you only need to bring a minimum of two sets of top sheets and fitted sheets, and two sets of as many pillowcases as you have pillows.

Ironically, bedding that’s labeled specifically for dorm rooms have poor quality, so avoid them. The most convenient and popular tactic is to buy the bed in a bag. This is a set containing a comforter and matching sheets. Some sets have additional matching throw pillows, shams and bedskirts. Shams are large decorative pillow cases meant for big pillows. Buying the set is easier and cheaper compared to buying the pieces separately and worrying if they all match.

When the quality of the bed is concern to you, invest in a memory foam or mattress pad. These are durable and will last for as long as you stay in the dorm, barring accidents. Sleep can become a rarity due to a busy student schedule, so add several soft pillows for that extra cozy feeling. Keep warm during the changing seasons by buying comforters and blankets. Flannel bed sheets feel soft and wonderful during cold weather. If you can afford it, get bed sheets with a high thread count, which indicates high quality and luxurious linen. Get a set of matching bedding coordinates and colorful throw pillows to make your new room extra homey and maybe then, you’ll be a little less homesick.
