You are now in college and living in student housing. You have a dorm room of your own and excited to be part of the college life. You look around your empty dorm room and wish you had some fantastic ideas for decorating. After all, it is your new home and you desperately want to add some style to your new scene.
As you begin to ponder over the theme of your new dorm setting, you suddenly realize that with all of your educational expenses, there just isn’t any budget left or very little left for decorating. As a student, most of your budget went to school expenses like books and school tuition and maybe a little for leisure activities. But, does this mean that you can’t have the perfect dorm experience? Does your dorm room have to suffer? Does this mean that you have to look at the bare walls and empty area for the next year or longer?
Decorating your dorm room on a dime just takes some creativity and in no time it will look like you spend a fortune. Every other student residing there will want to know your decorating secrets. Consider the tips below for decorating a dorm room on a tight budget:
1. The first place to find décor is from your parent’s home. Bring items from home that are special to you such as: photos of your family and friends, rugs, framed pictures, linens, curtains, throws, pillows, television, radio, computer and small appliances. Your parents will be the first to help you settle into your new surroundings by assisting with items from home.
2. Expect your decorating project to move slowly. By adding some décor over a period of time, it will take less of a toll on your budget.
3. As you need furnishings, remember that purchases that require assembly will be less expensive. This type of furniture is perfect for small areas such as a dorm room. You will probably consider purchasing a table or desk, chair and lamp for your study area. These types of furnishings are easy to assemble and easy to move from one place to another. But, sometimes these furnishings can be hard to find.
4. For some needed items such as bedding and linens, consider shopping at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army store for very low discount prices on good used items. They may also have other décor such as picture frames, dishware and needed appliances at very inexpensive prices.
5. As time goes by and you are involved in social activities, you will begin to collect memorabilia like concert tickets, tickets and pictures from sporting events, posters, and other items that have special significance. You can arrange these mementos on a bulletin board display and place on the wall above your study area. Add posters of your favorite movies, music bands, and sport’s cars to the walls with adhesive tape. Change them occasionally to give your room a new look.
In no time at all, your dorm room will have the look and feel of your new home setting. The best part of all is that it cost so little to decorate and you were able to do it on your tight budget. This may have been your very first decorating project. After finishing step back, admire your creativity and decorating experience, and remember to have fun in the process.
